California Routine
Choreographed by Frankie Manning in 1941 when he was the lead dancer in Whitey's Lindy Hoppers, based in Harlem at the Savoy Ballroom. The choreography named due to where they were going to perform it (Hollywood, CA) for the movie Hellzapoppin. The choreography begins after the spotlights of individual couples.
This routine has a long history and was changed a lot over the years. Read about it over on Swungover.
It was probably first choreographed to Jumpin at the Woodside by Count Basie, but the studio didn't have rights to that song so they wrote a new one for the movie. It can be done to any song that has 4 standard/AABA/32 bar choruses, and is often done now to Lindy Hopper's Delight by Chick Webb.
